Frederic Mattes studied school music at the HMDK Stuttgart, majoring in voice with Bernhard Gärtner and Thomas Scharr, as well as jazz/pop with a major in jazz trumpet with Bastian Stein and arrangement/composition with Prof. Rainer Tempel. At the same time, he completed a degree in choral conducting with Prof. Denis Rouger.

Frederic Mattes sings in numerous choirs, including the Gaechinger Cantorey, the figure humaine chamber choir, and the Schola of the Berlin Radio Choir (2023). With the octet calens vocalensemble, which he co-founded, he won the International A Cappella Competition in Leipzig in 2024.

He is a member of VOCES8 UK Scholars for the 2025–26 season. In 2020, he received a composition commission for the BEYOND scholarship – students compose for St. Eberhard. In 2023, he won a scholarship for the 6th European Choir Forum for Young Composers with Prof. Karin Rehnquist and Prof. Michael Alber. Some of his compositions and arrangements are published by HELBLING.
