Volker Arndt was a member of the Leipzig Thomanerchor, studied electrical engineering, took singing lessons on the side, and gained choral and solo experience in the Leipzig Vocal Ensemble under the later Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller and at various church music events. He did not pursue subsequent vocal studies in favor of a lucrative position as a research engineer in Braunschweig. When, after five years, there was no longer any professional future there, he applied not only in industry but also as a singer in radio choirs. The resulting busy temporary work with the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin led to a permanent position in 1997. Musically, he was and is in demand for madrigals, as a Bach evangelist and soloist in Baroque and Romantic cantatas and oratorios, but also for entertainment in the style of the Comedian Harmonists and sophisticated modern music. He values both ensemble and solo activities as an indispensable and valuable complement to choir singing.

What fascinates you about singing?

I appreciate all kinds of vocal music in principle, as long as it is well crafted and conveys not only perfection but also liveliness and emotion. Living up to this standard is hard work, especially in an ensemble, and it is not something that can be taken for granted. A good choir is much more than a group of good singers, which is unfortunately too often overlooked.
