Andrew Redmond

Andrew Redmond was born in Ireland. He became involved in choral music at a young age and had his first encounters with choral symphonies during a concert by his school choir with the Ireland Rte National Symphony Orchestra, performing Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. Redmond earned his bachelor’s degree at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin under Dr. Veronica Dunne. There, in the 1990s, he performed as a soloist in works such as Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In Munich, he completed postgraduate studies at the Richard Strauss Conservatory with Kari Lövaas and Kristina Laki. While still a student, he worked as a freelance singer in the Bavarian Radio Choir under Michael Gläser. Projects with Mariss Jansons and Andris Nelsons in particular reinforced his desire to pursue a professional career as a choir singer. In 2004, he finally moved to Berlin, where he has been a permanent member of the RIAS Chamber Choir since 2005.

What fascinates you about singing?

As a member of a professional concert choir, I find it particularly interesting to strike a balance between singing perfectly and singing expressively for the audience. I see us as music mediators who, above all, should convey the emotions of the composition to the audience—that’s very exciting.
